  7. Minutes of the Terminal Server Accounting and Authentication (TERMACCT)

  9. The meeting began with a presentation of the Authentication,
  10. Authorization, and Accounting services currently provided in Merit
  11. terminal servers, and how these features are lacking in commercial
  12. terminal server equipment.
  13.  
  14. Authentication was discussed and there seemed to be a consensus that
  15. Kerberos would be the way to go.  There was some question about whether
  16. terminal servers with limited resources would be able to implement
  17. Kerberos (such as, how much ROM would it take?).
  18.  
  19. Authorization was mentioned as being a difficult issue.  Kerberos V5 has
  20. hooks for authorization, but currently provides no definitions.  OSF DCE
  21. apparently provides some authorization capabilities using Kerberos V5,
  22. but it is not clear how suitable it would be for terminal servers.
  23.  
  24. Accounting and billing issues were discussed.  Among the issues
  25. discussed were the need to define accounting and billing variables.
  26. There also may need to be interaction between the authorization and
  27. accounting systems (to deny authorization for someone who has exceeded a
  28. usage quota, for example).  It was mentioned that the cost, in resources
  29. and real dollars, of accounting needs to be weighed against the actual
  30. value of the service.

  32. There was much interest in the notion of a ``connection manager'' which
  33. could provide a common or customizable user interface.  Such a manager
  34. would be run on a host machine and would likely interact with the
  35. authentication, authorization, and accounting services.

  37. The consensus of the BOF participants seemed to be that Merit should
  38. come up with a requirements document for further discussion.  It could
  39. then be determined whether a new working group should be formed.
